COmmon Sense Gun Laws

I support the enactment and enforcement of common-sense gun laws that both protect innocent lives and the Second Amendment.  I support recent measures by the Virginia Legislature and our City Council to better regulate and limit guns in public and city spaces.  I took the opportunity to speak on behalf of the ban on guns in City owned spaces in 2020 prior to its passage.

While I recognize these issues are primarily regulated by state and federal legislatures, I fully support the following measures; universal background checks, limiting ghost guns, banning guns at polling places and disarming domestic abusers.  The likelihood of intimate partner homicide increases tremendously when a gun is in the house.  One of the most urgent steps we can take to protect survivors is to prevent their abuser from legally obtaining or owning a firearm.   As a council member I would work closely with law enforcement and our Commonwealth's Attorney to encourage active enforcement of all tools at their disposal to protect our citizens from gun violence.  I would encourage educational opportunities for gun owners to learn safe storage practices and encourage more dialogue on the issue.  I would use my role on the Council to ensure that Alexandria remains a leader in the Commonwealth on enacting and enforcing common sense gun reforms.
